Let Me Introduce Myself

My name is Doris Muckenheim. If you’ve shopped at the Wolf Den, called, or ordered online, we’ve probably met, but this is my chance to tell you a bit about myself.

I started at the Wolf Den in 1987 while on a break from McGill University. I was working on a degree in African Studies with thoughts of development work or archaeology in my future. In a twist of fate I ultimately stayed in small town Ontario – Parry Sound – on the shore of beautiful Georgian Bay. I worked in Parry Sound over the years, notably managing the Museum, but always had some connection to the Wolf Den. I now own it and although it might seem my degree went to waste, that’s not the case.

It’s amazing how many different aspects there are to running a business. Customer service, managing staff, controlling inventory, accounting, marketing…the list is endless. I actually enjoy the entire process but my favourite part is connecting with artists and artisans from throughout Canada. I love bringing their work to the store, and telling people about what makes it special. The tradition, the techniques, the cultural influences – it all fascinates me and this is where my education pays off.

I was recently in Manitoba and met some amazing people. Carl Froese in Winnipeg actually brain and smoke tans hides (buffalo, moose, etc) in a Winnipeg workshop. His beautifully tanned hides are transformed into moccasins and bags. He’s working hard to teach young people his craft and is clearly proud of working with women who create such beautiful products from his hides. I also met Cree women in Churchill who sew moccasins and decorate them with incredible beadwork and caribou hair tufting. I get really excited about this stuff!

I love to travel and am working my way through Canada looking for art and craft based on tradition, heritage and culture. My next big trip will be to Yellowknife. I’m really looking forward to meeting some of the Dene ladies who create stunning baskets, moccasins and more.

Stop by the store if you’re in the area, or browse the website. You’ll never know what you might find, and if you have any questions, I’d love to chat!
