The turtle is an important symbol in native culture. It is said that the North America was repopulated on the back of the turtle, after the great flood. Many cultures refer to the continent as Turtle Island. This carving also includes a medicine mask known as Crooked Nose. Crafted by Onondaga carver He Moves a Bonfire, it measures 5″ L x 2.5″ H x 2″ W (7.5 cm x 6 cm x 5 cm).
