Soapstone Carving by Steve – Corn Sister 4993/26

This soapstone carving features several significant images. The corn sister references the importance of corn as one of the three sustainers of Iroquois life (beans and squash are the others). Corn is honoured as it grew from the breast of the Mother of the Twins, who became the Creator and the Devil. Her life giving milk is still found in corn. An Elder and Broken Nose Mask are also depicted. Measures 6″/15 cm high. Both sides are shown.
