Chestplates were traditionally used in battle to protect the wearer – these were crafted on Manitoulin Island by Ojibway artisan M. Pheasant. She has connected segments of turtle shell with sinew and decorated each with beads and fringes. The large piece measures 9.5″ long/24 cm and 3″ wide/7.5 cm, excluding fringe and bone ‘chain’. The small piece measures 5.5″ long/13 cm and 2.5″ wide/7 cm, excluding fringe and bone ‘chain’.
