Dene Bark Berry Basket by Marie Kotchea – Deer

This berry basket was crafted by Dene artist Marie Kotchea in Fort Laird, Northwest Territories. The deer and trees (on the lid) are rendered in quillwork. Traditional baskets from the region were used for storing food and supplies. This is durable enough to use, but can also be displayed as an original work of art. Crafted of birchbark, willow strips, spruce root strips, moosehide ties and porcupine quills, it measures 7″ x 6″ x 7.5″  (17.5 cm x 15 cm  x 18.75).
